Calling in the Poops

While I wait to find out the size of my baby’s little bootie, I have begun looking into diapering those cheekers. HELP! Those of you who have mastered the art of cloth diapering…stuffing inserts and washing these suckers…please give me your two cents on which ones work best. Poly or cotton flannel. Snaps or velcro. Ones that last longer and grow with the kid or the ones with a shorter life but a custom fit. Some work well with front load washers, some not so much. Some retain unmentionable smells and/or skid marks, others come squeaky clean (but with bleach—really???). I have no tolerance for scrubbing much of anything, so can I be at peace with some skids? At this point I am leaning toward bumGenius or Fuzzi Bunns, but there seem to be pros and cons to both. Who the hoots knew there were so many options? So all you veteran diaper-slapper-oners out there, give me a holla with your opinions!

Julie,
I loved gdiapers. They are flushable inserts that go in a cloth cover. The liner is wood pulp and cotton and dissolves in the toilet. I wasn't willing to bleach..or boil and was unable to deal with residual urine smells or skid marks. If you go with cloth, check out Weaver's store. It's a little Mennonite store in the middle of nowhere, but the best dang prices around!
Good luck. I've loved following your blog. Can't wait for your babe to be home with you.

I used the cotton prefolds with pro-wraps. It was pretty easy and cheap.

Hi! Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your kiddo-- how very exciting! My sister's son came home from Haiti last year, so while I don't *really* know what you're going through, I do know how tremendously hard the wait is! I am friends with Stacey Gagne, and when she saw your blog post, she directed me to it (cause she knows I am a huge cloth diapering nerd :). I have tried EVERY kind of cloth dipe out there, and quite honestly-- I love just plain ol' prefolds and either PUL or wool covers. I had blow-outs with Bumgenius every time (well, my daughter, not me...) I still like the ease of Fuzzibunz or similar for babysitters (or daddys! :) but I feel like prefolds are more absorbent. And since they are WAY less expensive than fitteds/pockets/AIO's, I don't feel too badly about the occasional residual skid. :) And the sun works WONDERS on those gross little stains, too; I definitely line dry my dipes in the summer (I don't use bleach; it breaks down the fibers of the cotton and the PUL of the cover). Like the previous poster said, I also like gdiapers. We only use the disposable inserts when we are out of town (they are actually more expensive than regular disposables) but infant sized prefolds fit perfectly into them, and they give a trimmer fit than most cloth. OK, is it weird that I just wrote a novel on your blog and I don't even know you? Sorry if that's weird. If you have the time/inclination, you should check out diaperswappers.com. They have ALL the information you would ever want to know about types of dipes, how to care for them, etc. etc. and you can also buy dipes on the site.

I agree with the previous posts. Prefolds are definitely cheaper and dry faster than expensive fancy pants all-in-ones. We use mostly prefolds with covers from diaperraps (they are like proraps) and then have some fuzzibunz that are easier for the babysitter (then she doesn't have to fold anything) I would offer you our covers but they are pretty beat now. I just keep hoping Ruben is completely potty trained soon so I don't have to buy any more!

I can't give you any advice on cloth diapers because I was MUCH too big of a wimp to handle that stuff. BUT I will tell you that OxiClean is my go-to soaker of the nasties. When Nora started spitting up everywhere I would soak her burping cloths in the washer with OxiClean for a few hours and then wash them. It got them white AND took out the smell without the nasty bleach smell.

Good luck, Jules!!!

PS---and you can buy GIANT BOXES of the stuff at Costco :)
